After leading Notre Dame to a 12-0 regular-season record and a berth in the BCS National Championship Game in 2012, quarterback Everett Golson has watched the team’s 2013 campaign on TV. In an interview with Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples, Golson discusses his violation of the school’s honor code and dismissal from the football team. He never explicitly admits to cheating on an exam, but rather reiterates his “poor judgement” during a test, and that his removal “wasn’t due to poor grades or anything like that.”
Golson will be eligible to return in 2014. Had he transferred to a junior college, Golson could have played earlier. However, as he explains at the 3:19-mark of the clip below, he “had his heart set on going to Notre Dame.”
As a redshirt freshman in 2012, Golson threw for 2,405 yards, rushed for another 298, and accounted for 18 total touchdowns. He is expected to win back his starting job next fall if he is re-admitted into Notre Dame.
