Florida’s season-opening showdown against an underrated Toledo team may have just gotten a whole lot more difficult. According to multiple reports, originally sourced from Gator Country and Scout’s Bob Redman, star cornerback/wide receiver Louchiez Purifoy has been suspended for the Gators’ Saturday game against the Rockets.
He is not the only one, however. Defensive tackle Darious Cummings, wide receiver Latroy Pittman, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Quinteze Williams and freshman defensive tackle Jay-nard Bostwick were also included in the same reports.
If they are true, and if all five are suspended, coach Will Muschamp loses another talented set of warm bodies. Offensive guard Jon Halapio is out with a torn pectoral muscle, center Chaz Green tore his labrum, wide receiver Andre Debose tore his ACL, linebacker Antonio Morrison is suspended following offseason legal troubles and running back Matt Jones is still recovering from a viral infection.
What’s more is the fact that Purifoy is widely considered the premiere cover-corner in the entire nation. As talented as he is, Muschamp has stated on multiple occasions that he will be playing at wide receiver as well at various points in 2013.
However, he will not be doing so against the Rockets, a team that won nine games in a solid MAC league a year ago.
The remaining four were all battling to find time on the field, however, this will most definitely set them back in a time that the team is trying to take the next step.
