When the No. 12 Florida Gators head approximately four hours down the road to South Florida on Saturday, it will be the last time they take on rival Miami for the foreseeable future.

The games between the two have served as a crystal ball of sorts for the nearer future. The five most recent winners of this in-state showdown have all finished within the top five of the AP Poll that very same year. Two times the winner has gone on to win the national championship, and the other three times the winner has played in a prestigious bowl game.

As things stand, The U is not ranked in the top 25. A win over the Gators and then an excellent showing in the ACC will change that in a hurry. The Gators are already just a smidgen outside the top 10, but a win on Saturday coupled with a run through the SEC would mean the same as it would for Miami.

Like we said, a look into the recent past shows that the future is bright for one of these two historically elite squads.

2008 – Florida: Won BCS national championship

2003 – Miami: Won Orange Bowl, finished No. 5 in AP Poll

2002 – Miami: Lost in Fiesta Bowl, finished No. 2 in AP Poll

1987 – Miami: Won national championship

1986 – Miami: Lost in Fiesta Bowl, finished No. 2 in AP Poll
