Fourth-year Detroit defensive end Willie Young may have played a part in the Lions’ huge, 40-9 preseason win over New England on Thursday night, but he wound up losing the larger war.
After putting the heat on Tom Brady in New England’s own end zone, Young grabbed the legend’s jersey and wagged a finger in his face. The action drew an unsportsmanlike penalty, negated a 3rd & 10 situation for the Pats, and found Young a nice warm spot on the bench for the rest of the game.
Young, in his fourth season out of North Carolina State, is in no danger of being cut, in spite of the boneheaded play. However, the Lions as an entity have become known in recent years for having a penchant of shooting themselves in the foot with actions just like this.
Apparently, coach Jim Schwartz was hoping to send a message to his players that such issues are not going to fly in 2013-14.
We’ll see if it leads to more positive play from his team, but in the meantime, let’s all point and laugh at Young’s failed attempt to point and laugh at Brady.
