Senior running back Mike Gillislee and junior safety Matt Elam have been named SEC Players of the Week. Both were crucial in the Gators’ upset over the previously third-ranked LSU Tigers.
Gillislee, who strapped the team on his back, carrying the ball 34 times for 146 yards, was named the SEC Offensive Player of the Week. He scored Florida’s two touchdowns, both in the second half, for the come-from-behind 14-6 victory. His 34 carries is tied for third most in University of Florida history.
With Saturday’s performance, Gillislee is now the SEC’s leading rusher with 548 yards. He has carried the ball a total of 103 times on the season and scored seven touchdowns.
Elam was named the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, along with LSU linebacker Kevin Minter. He made one of the most important plays of the game, forcing a fumble in the third-quarter following a 56-yard reception. The fumble changed the momentum of the game and all but sealed the victory for Florida.
Elam accounted for a team-high seven solo tackles and disrupted the LSU defense all day long. At one point, the Gators held LSU to 33 consecutive snaps without a first down.
From the Gator Nation, congratulations!
