James Harrison in Bengals colors looked odd enough at the 35-year old former Pittsburgh star’s introductory press conference, and then the man himself added a little more color to the day.

With so much tread on his tires, so to speak, the Cincy media asked him what he does (outside of the standard workout-type routine of a pro athlete, anyways) to keep himself game-ready against 20-somethings. Following several minutes of the standard rigamarole of talking about working hard and how it’s a “surprise” to be a Bengal, the question actually drew a smile form the big man.

Why?

Because he identifies himself as a “massage whore” and admitted to spending somewhere in the realm of $400,000 to $600,ooo per year on bodily care. The phrase itself was actually stricken from team’s official transcription of the presser. However, in the actual video of it, via Pro Football Talk, Harrison’s English is plain to hear.

“I’ve always been what everybody’d like to call — excuse my English — is massage whore,” Harrison said.  “I can’t think of nothing else.  They done called me it so long I’m starting to believe it.”

He should believe it, because he’s absolutely living it.

“My body is what helps me to make money. Whatever there is that I need to do to try and make myself better or get myself healthy, I’m going to do it. It wouldn’t be unreasonable to say that I spend anywhere between $400,000-$600,000 on body work, as far as taking care of my body, year-in and year-out. …

“As far as training, I have a hyperbaric chamber. I rent a hyperbaric chamber when I’m in Arizona. I have massages and I bring people in from New York, Arizona to where I’m at. There’s that cost. Like I said, I get body work almost every single day except Saturday and Sunday. I have a homeopathic doctor and I do a lot of homeopathic things. It’s just a lot, supplements, so on and so forth.”

Obviously, that is a very real amount of money the man is talking about right there. Not everyone can drop those kinds of bills on organic soy milk, sprouted granola, ayurvedic oils (for example). James explained that his commitment to keeping his body healthy has evolved as his career has drawn on.

For one thing, there was quite a bit of trial-and-error, that’s for sure.

“I didn’t know what a massage was. I take it back. I was getting a lot of massages. I was going to the chiropractor, too. You know, it’s everything. I started off with just one massage person and my chiropractor. Getting massages from different people, probably tried out maybe 150 different massage people. Right now I’m down to, maybe, I believe it’s five … actually I believe six. I have six people that I directly see.”
