During Saturday’s SEC East rivalry game against Tennessee, Florida’s starting quarterback, Jeff Driskel, threw a pick-six and then crashed to the ground. The 62-yard interception returned for a score was the insult added to a broken fibula.
Driskel would need season-ending surgery, forcing Tyler Murphy into the spotlight. The redshirt junior has been in the system long enough, but he had never thrown a pass in a college game.
Much to the delight of Florida fans, Murphy absolutely shined. With 134 passing yards, another 84 on the ground, two total touchdowns and zero turnovers, he led the Gators to a ninth straight win over Rocky Top.
On Sunday morning, Driskel tweeted out a hearty congrats. He also thanked an ever-classy Gator Nation for the support he has received.
Big win. Congrats to murph for playing so well in his 1st chance. Thanks for all the good luck wishes.
