Dolphins’ Jeff Ireland may have told Jonathan Martin to ‘punch’ Incognito

The soap opera currently going on in Miami has taken another turn. Pro Football Talk may have unearthed another event that resulted in Jonathan Martin’s abrupt departure from the Miami Dolphins.

According to PFT’s sources, Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland told Martin’s agent that the lineman should “punch” Richie Incognito.

Per multiple league sources, Dolphins G.M. Jeff Ireland received a call from Martin’s agent, Rick Smith, before Martin left the team on October 28. Smith complained to Ireland about the manner in which Incognito was treating Martin.

Ireland, according to the sources, suggested to Smith that Martin physically confront Incognito. Ireland specifically mentioned that Martin should “punch” Incognito.

While this information regarding Ireland is still hearsay, should it prove true, the GM may just be out of a job. General Managers are expected to treat harassment cases with more gravitas than simply advocating physical retaliation.
