The Kansas Jayhawks’ quest for a Big 12 and NCAA tournament championship took a hit on Monday night when head coach Bill Self announced that Joel Embiid would miss time due to a back injury. Even worse, CBS Sports is reporting that Embiid will likely be out until the Sweet 16 of the Big Dance, barring the Jayhawks make it that far.
While the Jayhawks still have quite a bit of talent on the team, especially with Andrew Wiggins more than capable of breaking out anytime, losing a centerpiece like Embiid is a big hit. Some analysts have pegged the 7-footer, who provides matchup nightmares for opposing teams, as the potential No. 1-overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.
