Johnny Manziel’s Text Message Influenced Cleveland Browns To Draft Him

And here we were thinking Johnny Manziel dreaded the moment the Cleveland Browns selected him at the 2014 NFL Draft. Boy were we wrong. Apparently Johnny Football is even more of a competitor than we thought (which is crazy considering we’ve been riding the JFF train for a long time), because wanting to resurrect the Browns is some serious stuff.

In an interview on Thursday, Cleveland QB coach Dowell Loggains told Sports Talk with Bo Mattingly that it was a text which helped lead the franchise to Manziel at the No. 22 pick.

“We’re sitting there and they keep showing Johnny on T.V. and Johnny and I are texting  and he shoots me a text and he says, ‘I wish you guys would come get me. Hurry up and draft me because I want to be there. I want to wreck this league together.’

“When I got that text, I forwarded it to the owner and to the head coach (Mike Pettine). I’m like ‘this guy wants to be here. He wants to be part of it.’ As soon as that happened, Mr. Haslam said, ‘pull the trigger. We’re trading up to go get this guy.”’

Ever since deciding to trade up, the Browns have been the most talked about team in the league. The franchise is also home to the hottest selling jersey in all of the NFL in Manziel’s.

Whether or not the longterm investment pays off, we will have to wait and see. One thing is certain, however: the competitor in Manziel is going to do everything in his power to make sure it does.
