The wild ride that is Johnny Manziel’s offseason continues. Whereas before Mr. Football may have been disappointing A&M fans, this time he is rumored to have let down quarterbacking royalty.
The folks over at Rumors and Rants have an inside source that claims the reigning Heisman winner was booted from the Manning Passing Academy for partying too hard on Friday and showed up late to Saturday drills.
The Texas A&M star reportedly enjoyed himself a little too much Friday night and rolled back into the camp at Nicholls State University some time around noon Saturday before getting the boot.
Manziel was supposed to participate in the “Air It Out” competition along with other top collegiate passers Saturday evening. He didn’t.
Camp officials told local media that Manziel “is sick” and was no longer at the camp. But our source claims he was kicked out at the behest of Manning paterfamilias Archie.
It would appear Archie wanted to teach the kid a lesson, but not embarrass him by publicly explaining why he wasn’t present Saturday night. Manziel better take the message to heart if he doesn’t want to end up just another Heisman winner who couldn’t hack it when he got to the NFL.
Rumors and Rants’ sources may have indeed been telling the truth, and Manziel may have indeed been too hungover to be bothered attending a camp with the prestigious Manning family. If that is the case, then the young man, his parents, his coaches and the program will have a hard time shrugging this off as a “boys will be boys” type of thing.
Sporting a Scooby-doo suit and getting drunk on Halloween is one thing, but standing up one Hall of Famer and two future members (well, maybe not Eli, we’ll see) is quite another.
At this point, the list of “haters” waiting to pounce on Manziel for having a bad game come fall is growing by the minute. This latest bit of news certainly won’t help.
1:00 Update: Deadspin has an update on the story:
Local radio reporter Patrick Netherton confirms that Manziel was dismissed from the Manning Passing Academy for showing up late after being out on Friday night. (Manziel and Alabama quarterback A.J. McCarron were photographed while out on Friday night, and McCarron was snapped with Peyton and Eli Manning.)
1:25 Update: The Manning Passing Academy has released a statement on the matter (via ESPN), denying that Manziel was told to go home for “partying”:
“Johnny Manziel did participate in some activities in the 2013 Manning Passing Academy as a college counselor/coach,” the statement said. “After missing and being late for practice assignments, Johnny explained that he had been feeling ill. Consequently, we agreed that it was in everyone’s best interest for him to go home a day early.”
It was Manziel’s first appearance as college coach/counselor at the passing academy after he had been a camper twice during his high school years. “I enjoyed meeting Johnny,” said Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning “I can remember a 20-year-old Eli (Manning) missing a meeting and catching some flak. We always have counselors who leave early. Johnny was great with the campers for the time he was here. He had to leave early. I wish him the best and I want him to come back as a counselor next year.”
