Pat Haden was a guest on “The Dan Patrick Show” on Wednesday. In the interview, Haden discussed the process he went through for USC’s coaching search, and the hiring of new head football coach Steve Sarkisian. However, the juiciest thing to come from Haden was in regards to Jon Gruden.
Gruden is a popular name thrown around during coaching searches. However, Haden says the Super Bowl winning coach only has eyes for the NFL.
“I talked with Jon a while back,” Haden said. “He wants to coach in the pros. If he’s a head coach, he wants to coach in the pros.”
USC views itself as the college program most closely related to the NFL, given its presence in Los Angeles and the culture established by past players and coaches. If Gruden had open discussions with Haden and passed on the USC job, it’s relatively safe to assume that he won’t work in the college ranks – at least not before returning to the pros.
