LeBron James has set basketball fans on fire everywhere with his recent pre-game warmup dunks. The dunks have taken the outcry for The King to participate in the slam dunk contest to an entirely new level, and now Magic Johnson has even managed to turn up the heat.
Johnson recently put a $1 million offer on the table for the winner of the dunk contest should LeBron enter, essentially offering Bron $1 million because it’s hard to imagine anyone touching his elite athletic ability.
“Please, LeBron, get in the dunk contest. I’m going to put up a million dollars,” Johnson said on Friday. “A million dollars from Magic to LeBron. Please get in the dunk contest. I go every year. I want to see you out there. A million to the winner.”
The Heat were in New York on Sunday to take on the Knicks, when ESPN’s Lisa Salters caught up with him about the offer. “I don’t have a response yet,” James told Salters. “Tell [Johnson] I’ll get back to him.”
Essentially his statement doesn’t mean much, but the fact that he didn’t turn it down means there is at least hope.
“I think about it every year,” James said.
With the fans, media, and now NBA legends turning up the heat on The King, maybe the $1 million offer will be enough to push him over the edge. Until then, we will all be relegated to unreal pre-game dunks, which in all honesty, are better than anything we saw during the 2013 Dunk Contest.
Could this be ‘The Decision Part II’?
