Following the loss of leading running back Mike Gillislee to the NFL, coach Will Muschamp and the Gators were planning on leaning on Matt Jones.

During Muschamp’s UF Media Day press conference on Thursday, however, Coach Boom informed the sports world that this is not a possibility at the moment. The 6-foot-3, 225-pound Jones is currently sidelined indefinitely with what Muschamp called a “serious viral infection.”

An elite talent, Jones stepped onto Florida’s campus as the No. 15-rated running back in the nation by Rivals.com. Yes, Gillislee, the senior, received the bulk of the carries in 2012, but Jones made what he could out of his limited playing time.

In 12 games played, Jones rushed for 275 yards on 52 carries with three scores. He also caught three passes for 10 yards.

While the Gators await further updates on Jones’ medical status, junior Mack Brown and true freshman Kelvin Taylor will receive the bulk of the first team carries.
