For well over a decade, the legendary Mariano Rivera has entered the late innings of New York games to the sound of Metallica’s iconic “Enter Sandman” blaring on the speakers throughout Yankee Stadium.
With the 2013 edition of the Bronx Bombers playing their final home game of the season – and thus Rivera’s storied career – it only seemed fitting that the band itself would play a live tribute to the greatest to ever close a baseball game.
Prior to the Yanks’ Sunday afternoon game against San Francisco, Metallica played “Enter Sandman” for the crowd, and then shared a moment with Rivera afterwards. Above, the band presented Rivera with a customized, autographed amp. How very rock ‘n roll.
Of course, not everyone was thrilled to have Metallica on hand.
