Stat of the day: Saban, Willingham coached last Michigan State vs. Stanford bowl game

It’s been quite a long time since Michigan State and Stanford met in a bowl game. The last time these two programs faced off in the postseason was in 1996, at the Sun Bowl.

An interesting tidbit from that game is who exactly was roaming the sidelines during the contest: Nick Saban and Tyrone Willingham. That day, Willingham’s Cardinal bested Saban’s Spartans.

It was both coaches’ second year at the helm of their respective programs. Willingham would go on to coach five more seasons on The Farm before being hired by Notre Dame, while Saban would spend three more in East Lansing before heading down to the Bayou to take over LSU.
