Down 2-0 in the American League Divisional Series, Tampa Bay entered the bottom of the ninth inning of Monday’s game tied with the Boston Red Sox, 4-4.
Then Jose Lobaton stepped up to the plate. With two outs remaining, the catcher blasted a home run off closer Koji Uehara and into the Rays’ ray tank in right-center field.
With one swing of the bat, the Rays’ season was extended for at least one more game. For the Red Sox, it was the first postseason walk-off against the ballclub since Aaron Boone’s legendary blast for the Yankees in 2003.
“It’s unbelievable. It’s something you can’t explain,” Lobaton said. “We never give up. We’re going to keep fighting.”
