The New Orleans Saints are superstitiously serious about their Popeyes chicken. When the team won the Super Bowl during the 2009-10 season, players ate Popeyes on every road trip. Now, heading into the 2014 NFL Playoffs as a No. 6 seed, some veterans are calling for their good luck charm.
“Coach has got to give us Popeyes in the plane again,” wide receiver Robert Meachem said. “Everybody’s talking about that. Every road trip in ’09 we had Popeyes. Coach needs to bring back the Popeyes. Wherever we play, whoever we play, when we get on the plane – have the Popeyes ready.”
While sitting out the entirety of last season due to “Bountygate,” Coach Sean Payton started exercising more and eating healthier. It appears that his diet consciousness has carried over to the team’s meals for the 2013 season.
“We’ve had Popeyes since ’09, but just not this year,” said running back Pierre Thomas, whose 8-yard touchdown gave New Orleans a 35-17 lead in the third quarter. “Oh, we had it so much in ’09. Popeyes has been good to us. I think we’ll have Popeyes on the plane this time.”
New Orleans has a tough road ahead of itself this postseason, traveling first to Philadelphia to play in frosty conditions. Using anything to get an edge, Payton caved and gave his men a taste of home.
