By now, it’s known that President Barack Obama is a huge sports fan, particularly those teams from his adopted home town of Chicago, Illinois. It’s also not a secret that, just like those who have held that office before, there are plenty of people who love him and hate him.
Someone who knows those same feelings (maybe even more on the hate side) is the commissioner of the NFL, Roger Goodell. During a recent interview with GQ Magazine conducted by former ESPN talking head Bill Simmons, the President couldn’t believe the amount of money Goodell is paid each year:
SIMMONS: Baseball, football, basketball, all the commissioner jobs open up next year. Which one would you want?
OBAMA: Well, I’m best suited for basketball. But I cannot believe that the commissioner of football gets paid $44 million a year.
SIMMONS: When you said, “I cannot believe…,” I didn’t know where you were going with that. Have you thought about calling Roger Goodell and being like, “What are you doing? Can I help you?” [Obama laughs.] “Can I give you some advice? Want to have dinner?”
OBAMA: They’re making a profit, and I think that’s what the owners are most concerned with.
Simmons would try to bait the President further about his thoughts on the commissioner, with President Obama telling the Boston native he wasn’t going to be dragged into Simmons’s fight with Goodell over “Deflate-Gate”.
