According to reports out of Auburn, new head coach Gus Malzahn has named JUCO transfer Nick Marshall as the Tigers starting quarterback for the 2013 season.
Marshall transferred from Garden City Community College following this past season, where he compiled 3,142 passing yards, 1,095 rushing yards, and 37 touchdowns.
The biggest issue with Marshall’s game has been his tendency to turn the ball over. During the 2012 season he threw 20 interceptions, but Malzahn likes the progress he is seeing out of his new quarterback (via AL.com):
Nick Marshall has emerged and earned the right to be our starting quarterback. As I’ve said, we wanted to go with the guy that gives us the best opportunity to win football games and Nick is that guy.
He has caught on quickly in the short period of time he has been with us. He is a playmaker with a big upside, and once he becomes more comfortable with the offense, he has the chance to improve each week.
