Notre Dame returned to its familiar perch atop the college football pantheon following an elite run through its 2012 regular season schedule and then a berth in the BCS national championship game against Alabama.
However, the Irish’s storybook run hit a brick wall in Miami, as the Red Elephants stomped all over coach Brian Kelly’s vaunted defensive front, and their weak offense was totally exposed.
When the final whistle sounded, the scoreboard read 42-14 in favor of the Crimson Tide. Hats, t-shirts and newspapers were handed out to members of the back-to-back national title winners, while boxes of Fighting Irish championship gear was sent to third-world countries across the world.
