President Obama has named the U.S. Olympic delegation for the 2014 Sochi Games. In what can be perceived as a statement regarding Russia’s anti-gay laws, he named openly homosexual athletes for both the opening and closing ceremonies.
For the opening ceremony in Sochi, revered tennis player Billie Jean King will be on the delegation. Caitlin Cahow will be a part of the closing ceremonies.
According to USA Today, this is also the first time in 14 years that a president (past or present), vice president or first lady has not been on the delegation. The White House has said that President Obama’s schedule will not allow him to travel to Sochi, but that the American representatives embody “the diversity that is the United States.”
Despite the Russian anti-gay laws, countries have been assured that no homosexual athletes or fans will be persecuted. Neither will people wearing pins or making small statements of protest.
The opening ceremony for the Olympics will be Friday, February 7, 2014.
