Southern Miss is really getting into the game in terms of fresh gear. That is probably for the best after suffering an 0-12 season a year ago.
First, the Eagles unveiled its new alternate helmet design that had been originally been brought to a fan vote. Now, the school has taken things a step further by overhauling the actual surface players will be competing on come fall.
We’re not talking about a new design, but actually an entirely new football field. According to CoachingSearch.com, Southern Miss is now using Matrix Turf by Hellas. This new technology includes its patented RealfillTM system, which prevents infill fly-out and splashing when athletes make cuts on the turf. It also improves drainage by drawing water away from the synthetic turf field faster.
Of course, the school did use the opportunity to freshen up the field’s look. Alternating green hues ever five yards is a new feature, as is the script “Southern Miss” logo at midfield. The logo replaces the old Golden Eagles eyes that had been at midfield.
What do you think of the new surface? As always, sound off in the comments section below!
