Eighth-seeded Pitt’s season ended in awful fashion on Thursday, as the Panthers were blown away by Wichita State, 73-55.

The performance of the team’s star player, Trey Woodall, proved to be a microcosm of the entire 40 minutes. He came in averaging 11.8 points per game, the most on the team, but only scored two points on 1-of-12 shooting. He also turned the ball over five times.

It was his final game as a collegian.

When asked what it felt like to go out like that, Woodall tried to give us a stock answer, but was unable to do so.

Instead, he showed us a human side to the game of basketball and to March Madness many fans in the sports world tend to lose sight of through all the channel-surfing, live-blogging and tweeting — Woodall broke down in tears at the prospect of never being able to take Pitt to the great heights he had arrived on campus to do.

“It’s a bitter taste in my mouth to end my career with one of the worst games I’ve ever played in my history,” he said. “I’m sorry I let my team down.”

Sometimes, we tend to forget these players are still just young men, learning and growing every day. Woodall showed us that, but unfortunately he had to suffer heartbreak before we could all see the type of heart he plays with.
