Early on Monday morning, reports surfaced that San Diego running back Ryan Matthews had been arrested the evening before after punching someone during a bar fight.

However, when Matthews himself woke up (he is out on the West Coast), he was as surprised as any of his fans were to hear the news.

So what actually happened here? Apparently it was just an extremely poor case of he-said-she-said and one reporter a little too excited to break some national news. Speaking with Michael Gehlken of U-T San Diego, Matthews further explained his surprise to all the phone calls and texts when he woke up.

I don’t know how my name got twisted in all this [stuff],” Mathews said. “I don’t know why my name is even being brought up.

I didn’t hit anybody. I wasn’t arrested. . . . I didn’t see a fight. I didn’t see anything,” he said.

The San Diego police released a statement that corroborated Matthews’.

“We can say that he was definitely not arrested by SDPD,” San Diego Police Department Sgt. Robin Rose told U-T San Diego, “but there might have been a separate arrest that lead to that [report]. . . . It was not Ryan Mathews.”

So there you have it. Matthews is not in any trouble. Chargers fans can breath easy that their starting running back will not be at risk of facing any sort of suspensions or disciplinary charges by the league.

Now, of course, they’re hoping Matthews can get to cutting down on his 12 career fumbles in 38 career games.
