Report: Washington Redskins hire Jay Gruden as new head coach

The Washington Redskins have hired Jay Gruden as their new head coach. Adam Schefter reports that the team will officially introduce Gruden Thursday afternoon.

Gruden, younger brother to Jon, has been the Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator since 2011. The Bengals made the playoffs in all three of Gruden’s seasons, and were the league’s No. 6-ranked offense in 2013.

The Redskins look to pick up the pieces from a moribund 3-13 season filled with turmoil. Gruden replaces Mike Shanahan, who compiled a record of 24-40 in four seasons. This is the Redskins’ seventh head coach since Daniel Snyder became owner in 1999.
