Rex Ryan and the New York Jets played spoiler to the Miami Dolphins’ playoff hopes on Sunday, finishing off the season with an overachieving 8-8 record. The Jets were winners of three of their last four games, as the team and first-year quarterback Geno Smith showed improvement with each outing.

Shortly after the game, Jets owner Woody Johnson addressed the media, stating that Ryan would return in 2014 as the team’s head coach.

Despite the public not learning that the Jets would keep Ryan until today, Johnson had made up his mind before the last couple of games.

John Idzik and the players were excited to hear the news that Ryan was still the team’s leader.

Next year will mark Ryan’s sixth with the franchise. He’s coached the Jets to a 41-38-0 overall record, and two AFC Championship Game appearances.
