Reports first broken by Dallasbasketball.com have Dallas in talks with Boston about acquiring all-star point guard Rajon Rondo. The site also reports the Mavs have pursued other high profile point guards, including Chris Paul, Tyreke Evans and Brandon Jennings. Though Dallas has been a rumored top candidate to land free agent all-pro center Dwight Howard, recent reports have Houston as his likely destination.
With Boston rebuilding after trading away head coach Doc Rivers, Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce and Dallas looking to make an off-season splash, the trade could make sense for both parties. Reports have Rondo as a possible way to attract Howard to Dallas. But in a catch-22, contract situations make it nearly impossible for the Mavs to sign both star players. Dirk Nowitzki, the long-time face of the franchise, has also been rumored in the deal to the Celtics but a trading the future hall of famer seems highly unlikely.
NBA teams can begin talking with free agents on July 1 but official transactions cannot be announced until July 10.
