*UPDATE* – Matthews was never actually arrested, and faces no legal issues for any bar fight

According to a report by Michael Drentea of Examiner.com, San Diego running back Ryan Matthews was arrested on June 30 at 8:45 p.m. local time outside an up-scale San Diego nightclub, SideBar.

There is no comment from the San Diego police as of writing, and the Chargers have yet to release a statement either. However, Drentea has an eyewitness report from the alleged fight.

One witness, David Nieto aka Dj Wired, reported seeing a group of five Hispanic males inside the club proceed to speak to Mathews and another black male. All men including Mathews were described as intoxicated. The altercation took place outside the club gate where everyone smokes. Witnesses say words over a female were exchanged and Mathews reportedly knocked one male out cold and the individual was taken to UCSD medical hospital.

Matthews  was the Chargers’ first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft. He inked a five-year, $26 million deal with $15 million guaranteed. However, he has suffered several and  injuries since making the leap from Fresno State, and has been plagued with inconsistency.

In 38 career games, he has compiled 2,476 yards and 14 touchdowns and 12 fumbles.
