Before Sandy Koufax earned his place among the legends of the game of baseball, he was merely a youngster stuck with an Independence League team in Cincy.
Below is the 1954 scouting report on Koufax, an 18-year old with only A- control of his pitches. Interestingly, the scout who filled out this report calls him a great hitter as well.
At the bottom, it mentions that Koufax was not interested in the pros until after graduation – however, it doesn’t mention anything about Yom Kippur (Koufax famously refused to pitch on the Jewish holiday).
Just for a little reference, here’s Koufax tossing out the ceremonial first pitch at a Dodgers game in April, 2013. The old fastballer’s still got it.
