The 12th Man isn’t messing around anymore. Seattle’s Week 2 matchup against hated NFC West rival San Francisco is expected to bring every member of the Seahawks faithful out of the woodwork to CenturyLink Field, and they will all be screaming as loud as they can.
Volume 12, a Seahawks fan group, sent an application to the folks over at Guinness to have the world record-keeping company head to the Pacific Northwest to officially record the decibel levels of the Seahawks-Niners game. Texas A&M fans have called themselves “The 12th Man” for ages, but the Seattle faithful has commandeered it and they are hoping their version of the name goes down in history.
As literally the loudest fan base ever officially recorded.
It’s a pretty Gamedayr-ish idea, if you ask us.
According to CBS Sports, the honor of being the world’s loudest crowd currently resides in Turkey. Fans of the soccer club Galatasaray S.K. hit an absolutely deafening 131.76 on March 18, 2011 at the Ali Sami Yen Sport Complex Turk Telekom Arena.
If that sounds loud, well, that’s because it is. Even with the nickname and all the enthusiasm in the world (perhaps literally), the loudest it has ever gotten in The Link is 112.
This is going to be a challenge, but the 12th Man is still the 12th Man. The actual Seahawks down on on the field will have quite the challenge on their hands against a 49ers team favored by pretty much everyone to get back to the Super Bowl and potentially win it after losing to Baltimore a year ago.
A few Marshawn Lynch “beast mode” touchdowns could a long ways toward both a victory for the Seahawks on the field and one for Seattle in the record books.
