The Tiger Woods – Sergio Garcia rivalry has really been heating up lately. It was mostly typical trash talk back and forth, however, on Tuesday it took a turn to the ugly side.
During the European Tour’s gala player’s awards, Garcia reportedly made a “fried chicken” comment regarding Woods. The Guardian has the details on how it came about:
The Spaniard was on stage at the European Tour’s gala players’ awards dinner, where he was questioned by the Golf Channel’s Steve Sands. García, who has been embroiled in verbal battles with Woods since the Players Championship at Sawgrass this month, was asked in jest if he would have the American round for dinner one night during the upcoming US Open. “We will have him round every night,” García said. “We will serve fried chicken.”
The more Garcia opens his mouth, the more he shoves his foot deeper down his throat.
Yesterday, he stated that Woods hadn’t told the truth in 15 years, and now he is dropping racist comments about the golfer he has been chasing his whole entire life.
During The Players Championship, the Spaniard also blamed Woods for drawing a club while Garcia was in the middle of a golf swing. This was a day before he provided the golf world with one of the biggest choke jobs ever seen on the links.
Garcia quickly issued an apology regarding his “fried chicken” comment.
“I apologize for any offense that may have been caused by my comment on stage during The European Tour Players’ Awards dinner. I answered a question that was clearly made towards me as a joke with a silly remark, but in no way was the comment meant in a racist manner.”
Unless Garcia is really as ignorant as he has appeared to be lately, he understood his “joke” was racist as soon as it left his mouth.
No matter what the case, however, this feud is making golf relevant again.
