Shawne Merriman announced his retirement from the game of football on March 6 following eight seasons with the Chargers and Bills due to a slew of injuries that plagued the final years of his career. However, and unfortunately, the former superstar finds himself in the news once again with serious medical issues.

Merriman was taken to a Los Angeles hospital Sunday night because of an undisclosed “medical emergency,” LA police told NFL.com (via The Washington Post).

The Washington D.C. native and Maryland alum was transported from a nightclub to Cedars Sinai Medical Center by the L.A. Fire Department. The hospital has not released a report on his condition as of writing.

A police spokesman told NFL.com that no criminal report had been filed, either.

Still only 29 years old, Merriman suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in his very first practice with Buffalo after the Bills claimed him off waivers from San Diego in 2010. He partially tore his Achilles yet again and was forced to go back on injured reserve in 2011.

In 2012, Merriman was simply no longer the tenacious pass rusher that had made him a Pro Bowler in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well as the NFL’s sacks leader in 2006 (he compiled 17 in just 12 games following a four-game suspension due to steroid use).

As noted by The Washington Post, Merriman was tweeting early Monday morning, indicating that he could be doing better.

*UPDATE* 9:30 a.m. Merriman reportedly overdosed on unspecified drug and alcohol combination.

*UPDATE* 10:30 a.m. Here’s where the story takes a turn for the bizarre.

Merriman was reportedly hospitalized at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Sunday night. TMZ caught up with Merriman at 12:26 a.m. Monday morning as he was leaving Greystone Manner, an LA nightclub. He appeared to be completely sober and showed no signs that he was nearly overdosing a few short hours before.

Here is the video conversation between Merriman and TMZ.

As mentioned earlier, Merriman was tweeting Monday morning and appeared to be fine.
