Arizona State’s Steve Patterson appears to be the frontrunner to replace DeLoss Dodds as athletics director at the University of Texas. According to Sports Illustrated, Patterson, a Longhorns alumnus, recently met with Texas’ hiring committee.
The committee was impressed with Patterson’s eclectic sports background. Prior to becoming the athletics director at Arizona State, he worked for the Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, and was president and general manager of the Portland Trailblazers.
Patterson is a finalist for the position, as is West Virginia AD Oliver Luck. Texas is the anchor of an unsettled Big 12 conference. Whoever is chosen as the next AD will certainly have to confront future conference realignment, and most likely search for the school’s new football coach. He will be responsible for ushering in a new era at Texas.
While Luck has a varied background, just as Patterson, the latter’s connections to the state and university may present a more natural fit.
