This news might hurt the hearts of college football fans everywhere: Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney are actually good buddies.
The two recently ran into one another at North Gwinnett High School (Georgia) while on a recruiting trip. North Gwinnett coach Bob Sphire, seeing an opportunity to have a little fun, tried to get the adversaries to wrestle. He shared the following with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
“Dabo was in here first, and I was telling him how entertaining those two have been with their quotes back and forth, and their banter. You know, the first thing (Swinney) said was ‘I really like him (Spurrier). We’re really good friends.’ I will be darned if that wasn’t the first thing that Spurrier told me when I tried to stir it up. He said, ‘I really like Dabo. We’re really good friends.’
“Anyways, Dabo was leaving out when Spurrier was coming in, and I stopped them and said, ‘Look, I’ve got a fundraising idea. There’s a 1,000 kids over there in the cafeteria right now for lunch. We’re going to go over and wrestle, and I’m going to charge admission.’
“They just smiled and laughed. They talked to each other for a little bit. I told Coach Spurrier that I get a kick out of his little digs, the way he stirs everybody up. I think it’s funny.”
A Spurrier-Swinney wrestling match? Despite the age gap, my money is on Spurrier. We can only hope that some big company catches wind of this and lays down an offer (maybe with charity in mind) that the coaches can’t refuse.
As far as the friendship goes, don’t think for a moment that the two don’t despise one another when it comes to competition. Both coaches inked contract extensions this offseason, and will likely be treating fans to many more years of trash talking.
