The Texas Longhorns made their long-awaited 2013 debut against New Mexico State with a slight modification on their helmets. In order to honor the 50th anniversary of the program’s 1963 national championship-winning team, the Horns sported numbers above the Texas logo on their helmets just like the team did decades before.
The look was only supposed to be a special-edition commemoration for the season-opener, but plans have changed. The players themselves have voted overwhelmingly in favor (roughly 90-percent of the team likes them) of keeping the numbers on the lids for the remainder of the 2013 campaign.
According to SB Nation, Texas also wore numbers above the Longhorn logo in the season-opener against Louisiana-Lafayette in 2005 and then again in 2009 against Texas A&M.
The program won both of those games, as well as its opener this year, 56-7. Heck, more of the same and the numbers may be permanent.
