The battle of New York is sure to reach new heights this coming October. With the key offseason acquisitions of Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and company, the Brooklyn Nets have bolstered their team with great veteran leadership and some championship experience. But on the other side of the bridge, we have Carmelo Anthony coming off the best season of his career with the New York Knicks and, of course, JR Smith, who walked away with last year’s Sixth Man of the Yearhonors.
Both teams have a lot more in common than you would think, too: star players across the board, a rejuvenated fan base and an undying hatred for one another. Pierce and Smith have already been exchanging words all offseason via Twitter, and now it’s reaching new heights. It all started when Pierce stated that his hatred for the Knicks was on a new level. For years, he has been a villain at MSG, but this year, as a member of the Nets, his bad guy persona should be pushed over the top.
Never one to back down and always defending his team, JR fired back, telling Paul that his words will have consequences. Hopefully he wasn’t alluding to anything of the Aaron Hernandez variety. This even has the league worried, as they’ve already warned both owners Mikhail Prokhorov and James Dolan to tone down the rivalry. But as we all know, that’s not going to happen.
Onto the next chapter of the “war of words,” it’s Pierce, yet again, going straight after JR. When being asked about Smith, Pierce responded, “Who?” and never answered the question. This of course prompted another response from Smith, who laid all down nice and simple. In an interview with the New York Post, the 28-year-old star said this:
