ESPN’s Outside the Line’s released a video showing the abusive practices basketball coach Mike Rice employed while leading the Rutgers’ program.

After athletic director Tim Pernetti initially reviewed and suspended Rice, the public airing of the video gave him no choice but to fire his coach.

On Wednesday, Pernetti released a statement regarding Rice’s attempted rehabilitation and subsequent firing.

“I am responsible for the decision to attempt a rehabilitation of Coach Rice,” Pernetti said in a statement. “Dismissal and corrective action were debated in December and I thought it was in the best interest of everyone to rehabilitate, but I was wrong. Moving forward, I will work to regain the trust of the Rutgers community.”

Regaining the trust of the Rutgers and national community will take time. On Wednesday, however, Pernetti took the very first step in the right direction in sending Rice home.
