It’s little surprise that Johnny Manziel is owner of the top selling jersey among 2014 NFL rookies. What may be somewhat of a surprise, however, is how fast Michael Sam’s St. Louis Rams jersey is flying off of the shelf.
According to ESPN’s Darren Rovell, Sam checks in at No. 2 for NFLShop.com’s top-selling NFL rookie jerseys. The combination of Sam coming out as openly gay and being selected by the team just down the road from his college are likely factors in ballooned sales.
“We think this a sign of what we’ve been saying all along, that Michael’s inclusion in the NFL is bringing fans into the game who weren’t previously consumers of the NFL game,” stated Sam’s agent, Cameron Weiss.
Jersey sales No. 3 through No. 5 belong to Jadeveon Clowney’s Houston Texans jersey at No. 3, Teddy Bridgewater’s Minnesota Vikings jersey at No. 4, and Blake Bortles’ Jacksonville Jaguars jersey at No. 5.
Exact numbers on the sales have yet to be released. As the offseason wears on and we get closer to football season it’ll be interesting to see how these numbers hold up.
