Following the Bruins upset loss to Minnesota in the second round of the Tournament, many speculated that it could have been Howland’s last game as the coach of UCLA.
The speculation appears to be a reality now.
The 55-year-old Howland has been the head coach of the Bruins since 2003, and has seen considerable success while in LA. He took UCLA to three straight Final Fours (2006-08). Two of those losses came against the mighty back-to-back Florida Gators squad, featuring Al Horford and Joakim Noah.
Pitt head coach Jamie Dixon was rumored to be on the short list of the Bruins, however, he just re-upped his contract with the Panthers.
On top of firing Howard, UCLA will also likely lose star freshman Shabazz Muhammad to the NBA Draft. In addition to Muhammad, Larry Drew and several others have exhausted all of their eligibility.
It will be interesting to see who UCLA turns to for the future of their program.
