UNC Shortstop Michael Russell Beaned With Fastball, Leaves Game Under Own Power

It was a scary moment at McKethan Stadium on Saturday afternoon, as junior UNC shortstop Michael Russell was beaned with a fastball. With two on, two out and a 3-0 count, McKethan took a Bobby Poyner fastball to the head.

Play was halted while North Carolina coaches determined whether Russell could continue playing. After a short delay it was determined that he would not return, and Zach Daly entered the game as a substitute.

Thankfully, Russell was not seriously injured. He left the field under his own power, never lost consciousness, passed concussion tests and received stitches to repair a laceration above his eye.
