What we have here may just be the greatest Twitter trolling of all time.
The U.S. Men’s National Team was losing to Panama heading into stoppage time in a World Cup qualifying match that meant nothing to the Americans whatsoever. The stars and stripes had already qualified for the Cup in Brazil. However, the Panamanians had not – and neither had Mexico.
All the Panamanian side had to do was win and they would be through, while simultaneously knocking the Mexicans out. Through the game’s first 90 minutes, that was exactly what was happening.
But it all changed so quickly. In barely more than three minutes, both Graham Zusi and Aron Johannsson scored for the Americans, and Panama was a loser.
The win shockingly gave Mexico new life, and set up a winner-take-all playoff all the way out in New Zealand.
Perhaps drunk on emotion, or from a little too much champaign, the person working the USMNT Twitter account trolled Mexico hard after the final whistle had blown. But first, here’s how Mexican TV announcers reacted to the last-gasp American effort. It’s fantastic; just make sure to listen for the scattered English shouts of “We love you!” and “God bless America!”
Now for the best part: Gratitude from Mexico wasn’t good enough for the USMNT social media director.
