UTEP and Kentucky to play in 2016, 50th anniversary of Glory Road game

The UTEP Miners and Kentucky Wildcats announced a 2016 meeting to commemorate the 1966 national championship game.

The 2006 movie “Glory Road” introduced an entirely new generation of fans to the mountain climbed by Texas Western and its coach, Don Haskins. Haskins won the 1966 title game after starting five black players against Kentucky’s all-white starting five. It was a watershed moment in the struggle for equal rights that goes on to this day.

Texas Western is now the University of Texas-El Paso. On Wednesday, coach Tim Floyd announced his Miners will play John Calipari’s ‘Cats 50 years after the momentous title game.

How great is this?

It’s Miners not minors. Not everyone on the team is underage.

Thanks, Thomas. The team is a little older than we thought! Cheers.–GD
