The San Francisco 49ers are coming off a Super Bowl appearance and are expected to be even better in 2013. Of course, superstar tight end Vernon Davis is going to be a huge part of the franchise’s push to greatness.
Which is exactly what makes his recent comments regarding division rival Seattle — also expected to compete for a Super Bowl berth in 2013-14 — so surprising.
“You have a team like Seattle who is coming up. They are building a dynasty over there. They have some good players over there who are eager to win. These guys are starving. We have to really keep that in mind because these guys are coming to take us out,” Davis told Jeff Darlington of the NFL Network. “I respect them, just like I respect my team, but we want to win too. We are in it to win.”
Davis’ comments are not exactly toeing the party line. Yes, it’s great that he wants to win games, but talking about a bitter-rival franchise building a dynasty just seems a bit taboo.
This only a little after his head coach, Jim Harbaugh, talked about his overwhelming disapproval of Seattle’s repeated and positive performance-enhancing drug tests.
If Seattle comes out and really makes a statement against Davis and the Niners, the tight end’s offseason quote is going to be brought up time and again.
And that would be just about as much fun for him as San Francisco fans having to read this quote in the first place.
