This scary crash by Chilean Cyclist Irene Aravena resulted in a fractured kneecap, a broken bicycle, and forfeiture by the team.
According to Wide World of Sports, officials at the velodrome had not removed a starting gate due to a false start. Avarena was drafting her teammate, and could not see the waving red flag. By the time she saw the gate, it was too late to stop or change course.
Considering the speeds cyclists can reach in the velodrome, and the apparent lethargy by officials right before the crash, this unfortunate accident looks like it could’ve been easily avoided.
