One of the reasons why sporting news outlets (including this one) post funky videos and pictures of athletes or coaches crying, celebrating, laughing and cursing is because it strikes a common nerve between us fans and the pros. We can relate with athletes and coaches during the times they show us that they are human.
It is not easy what professional athletes do, and winning regularly at the most elite of levels only becomes all the more difficult with each successive victory. The pressure mounts to continue winning, the media presence increases and the entire field is chasing them.
Some may thrive on such pressure, while others wilt. Fred Couples was one of the rare men who thrived, all alone, on the golf course.
But finally, after decades on the links and as he earned his place among the greatest, his emotions got the best of him.
At roughly the 6:00 mark, Couples breaks down as he gave his acceptance speech as a member of the 2013 World Golf Hall of Fame Class.
Indeed, the world of sports can break you down, but it can also build you back up. Couples understood all of that on this evening and it overwhelmed him for a short while.
But that’s alright. It’s the raw emotion that drives sports, and as fans, it is always refreshing to see it.
