Video: Gary Payton takes credit (blame?) for Allen Iverson’s ‘Practice?!’ speech

Former Philadelphia 76ers superstar Allen Iverson officially filed for retirement on Wednesday following a 14-year career.

Of course, that led the panel on the all-new Fox Sports 1’s all-new Fox Sports Live to hop into the way-back machine for a chat about AI’s instantly infamous “Practice?!” speech one more time – only this time with a little insight from NBA Hall of Famer Gary Payton.

Apparently, Mr. Payton and Mr. Iverson had imbibed one too many cold beverages and the two began to chat about durability in the league. Payton shared one very specific insight that Iverson felt he deserved for himself: Payton’s old SuperSonics coach, George Karl, didn’t make him practice.

What? Listen to him take the credit (or blame, possibly?) for Iverson’s rant in the clip below.

Over his illustrious 17-year career, Payton played in 80 or more games in a season 12 times. Iverson only played in 80 games or more a mere three times.

Perhaps we should have taken Iverson’s speech a little more seriously.

Either way, it’s still hilarious after all this time.
