Living legend and guaranteed first-ballot Hall of Famer Mariano Rivera made his final appearance in pinstripes on Thursday night against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Replacing Dellin Betances in the top of the eighth, the greatest closer of all time entered for the Yankees to one last rendition of Metallica’s “Enter Sandman.”
His entrance drew attention, but his exit in the ninth was nothing short of historic.
After recording four outs (on four batters), fellow New York legends Andy Pettitte and Derek Jeter trotted out to the mound to bring him to the dugout. From there, tears no one expected – especially Mo – flowed as Rivera emotionally exited the game for the very last time.
