It has been a long offseason for football programs nationwide. That holds especially true for the folks in the SEC, where fans are absolutely chomping at the bit for anything and everything football related they can get their hands on.
So, when one of the members of the Florida Gators coaching staff was headed to Melbourne (Florida, not Australia), a crowd of boosters showed up to hear what he had to say. However, no one in the room could have predicted that offensive line coach Tim Davis would call Alabama’s Nick Saban “the devil,” and no one could have foreseen the nation firestorm that followed.
Davis worked under Saban (and Gators coach Will Muschamp) with the Miami Dolphins and then for a year at Alabama before joining Muschamp in The Swamp.
Thus, when asked his opinion on Davis’ statement, ESPN analyst Mark May absolutely shredded him:
“I don’t know Tim Davis, but my opinion, he’s a classless backstabbing coward. You’re talking about a guy in Nick Saban that gave you an opportunity to coach. He gave you an opportunity to move up in the coaching ranks, so you could support your family, put food on the table, clothes on their backs. Not for one years. He gave you the opportunity for three years on his staff (two with the Miami Dolphins, one with Alabama).
If you have a problem with Nick Saban, pick up the phone, put your big-boy pants on and man up and say, ‘Coach, I got a problem with you and here’s why.’ You don’t go out in front of some group of friendly fans out there and say that about Nick Saban, a guy that gave you an opportunity to be a coach.”
Wow, tell us how you really feel. Obviously, Davis’ words were not ideal, but the guy is probably not a “classless backstabbing coward,” as May so eloquently put it.
What’s interesting is the fact that May admitted to not even knowing Davis personally before going off on him. He says that Davis should have spoken to Saban personally if he had a problem with him, but May himself calls Davis out on national television without any sort of courtesy phone call, either.
What about those “big boy pants” again?
