Doug Mientkiewicz spent years in the Major Leagues, so he has seen his fair share of bench clearing brawls. Now, however, he’s a manager for the Fort Myers Miracle, the Minnesota Twins’ high-A affiliate. He is expected to impart a little wisdom and a lot of fundamental training into his young men in hopes of advancing them to the higher levels of the farm system.
Apparently he had a lesson in brawling in mind as well.
According to the News-Press, this fight was days in the making. A Bradenton Marauders pitcher bowled over the Miracle’s catcher on Friday. That led to some pitching brushbacks on Saturday and eventually into a screaming match between the two managers later in the game.
The video below missed Mientkiewicz charging out of the dugout to tackle Bradenton manager Frank Kremblas but we can see his No. 16 white jersey right in the heart of the scuffle before players pulled the two managers apart.
Obviously, the Twins’ minor league director was not impressed.
“Doug knows that’s not the example we want him to set for our players. He is a very competitive guy, and he let his emotions get the better of him. He was very apologetic for what happened, both to me and to the team. He realizes that’s not how we want him to represent the Minnesota Twins.”
